There's No Place Like Home

On Saturday, April 21st, we returned home after a life-changing, exhausting 4-night stay at the hospital.  Although we will fondly remember our experience at Waukesha Memorial Hospital, we were ready to start our life as a family of five (including Bailey) at home.  We were anxious to introduce the twins to their house, their nursery, and their canine sibling.  We were also more than ready to leave the accomodations of the hospital behind us and to return to sleeping in our own bed and using our own shower.  Were we ready to leave the support of the nursing staff?  Not exactly, but we figured that we would need to take on parenthood sooner or later.   Besides, by the evening of the third day of our stay, it was clear to us that we were being "weaned" from the ready assistance of the nursing staff.  Evidently, the hospital doesn't want new parents to get too dependent on the extra help!

So, with less training than one would receive when buying a new car, we were sent on our way!  We returned home on a bright but chilly Saturday.  It felt so good to be outside of the confines of the hospital, though it did feel surreal to be driving home with our TWO NEWBORN BABIES (What?!?).  Jim, as the protective daddy, drove home with a death grip on the steering wheel and with eagle eyes on the road.

Once we got the kiddos home, I entered the house first to greet Bailey, who returned the greeting with lots of sloppy kisses.  I then went back outside to let Jim know that he could bring the babies in to meet their furry brother.  Although we had been anxious to see how Bailey would react to the babies, he truly didn't seem to care about them!  Instead, he was obsessed with smelling Jim's shoes and giving me more kisses!

Over the days and nights that followed, we have all come to know each other better.  The babies have made us smile, laugh, and cry.  They have dirtied about 20,000 diapers.  They have listened to lullabyes and have been rocked to sleep.  The babies have experienced their first baths and tummy time sessions.   The twins even made their first of many shopping trips to Target!

It is difficult to believe that three weeks have now passed since our homecoming.  I must admit that the last few weeks have been filled with the most exhausting days and nights of our lives!  Yet, we are already settling into a schedule and daily routines.  The babies are growing and thriving, and we would like to think that they are happy!  Their mommy and daddy are tired, but we are certainly happy!

We're headed home!

Home sweet home!
