Discovering a Treasure of Oz: A Visit to Lion's Den Gorge (*A Blog Circle*)

Earlier this month, I happened upon an opportunity to join a group of documentary photographers from around the world in forming a blog circle focused on documenting and sharing local outings.  Each month, members of the circle set out to capture a local outing in photographs, and then share those images at the end of the month on their blogs, linking their posts to other posts within the circle.  This month, we were challenged to document an outing to a body of water; whether visiting an ocean, a lake, a pool, or a puddle, members were to collect documentary images from the experience and share those photographs on their blogs today.

Our Labor Day water outing took us to Lion's Den Gorge Nature Preserve in Grafton, Wisconsin, located on the shore of Lake Michigan.  It was our first visit to the park; in fact, we didn't know that it even existed until a neighbor asked if we had ever been there before.  After our trip to the park, which offers amazing views from the bluff high above the lake and access to a beach by way of a steep staircase down a "gorge-ous" gorge, we are anxious to go back when the trees are in their full fall splendor.

For our twins, the highlight of this outing (and any beach outing) was combing the sandy shore for rocks to then throw into the water.  They didn't have to look too hard for rocks, as the beach was fairly well decorated with pebbles and stones.  I think they even hid some in their pockets to bring home as souvenirs!

Beautiful! Love how you composed your images - it really shows how little the kids are in the great big world around them!

I am so glad that you're in the circle! Thank you for participating! I love that your neighbor let you in on that gem of a beach! It's gorgeous! I have twins a little younger than yours and looking through these got me excited for the year ahead of us! The first and last images are my favorite! The texture is phenomenal in the first one and the trees surrounding them so closely in the last makes me all kinds of nostalgic for when I grew up in North Carolina. Every time I go back for a visit I feel so secure surrounded by so many trees! Love this! Looking forward to seeing more from you as the months go on!!
