A Day at the Zoo: Hippos

Next on our route around the Milwaukee County Zoo was the hungry hippopotamus. We happened upon the hippo just as a zookeeper was launching apples into its little lake. The zookeeper threw them over the hippo's head, but the hippo still sat in the water with its mouth wide open, oblivious to the apples that were behind it. This guy was in need of a visit to a dentist - check out those ugly teeth!

Kris shared a fun fact about hippos with us as we watched the hippo in the water: Hippos do not swim, but simply wade into the water to keep cool! I also read that their skin secretes an oil that acts like sunscreen to protect their skin from the hot sun. Very interesting!
